Replacing light sockets?

Tried to replace light shade on ceiling light but can't unscrew plastic fitting that holds shade in place. Do I need to buy pendant set with rose and all the fitting? Is there a way of breaking off the plastic and replacing it? house is 35 yrs old and there are several light fittings stuck like this. Many thanks
